Jay Cowen, MD
President and Chief Executive
An intensivist with deep experience caring for critically ill patients and managing and studying intensive care units, Jay Cowen founded the company to create a better model for critical care medicine. Dr. Cowen serves as the director of critical care at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, Ill. and as medical director of the eICU Connection for Provena Health, based in Joliet, Ill.
Before founding The Intensivist Group, Dr. Cowen led Northwest Community’s ICU as a member of another medical group. He previously was the medical director of the ICU for Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, Pa.
Dr. Cowen attended the University of Illinois College of Medicine and completed his residency at Oregon Health Sciences University. He then completed a fellowship in surgical critical care at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia. He subsequently completed a pulmonary fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center that included concurrent study in critical care economics and quality management at the Leonard Davis Institute for Health Care Economics in the Wharton School of Business. Dr. Cowen is board-certified in internal and critical care medicine.
In 2006 and 2008, Dr. Cowen received the Presidential Citation by the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) for his contributions to improving ICU quality of care. He is one of four Midwest representatives for the international Surviving Sepsis campaign. He is a member of SCCM and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians.
Stephen Matchett, MD
Vice President and Chief Medical Officer
Steve Matchett brings strong expertise in building and running on-site critical care units as well as telemedicine. He serves as the company’s lead consultant as well as oversees clinical operations for its Eastern region, including quality initiatives and outcomes measurement. Dr. Matchett, who joined The Intensivist Group in 2007, also is medical director of the intensive care unit at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby, Pennsylvania.
Prior to joining The Intensivist Group, Dr. Matchett was medical director of telemedicine services and chief of the division of critical care medicine at Lehigh Valley Hospital. In that position, Dr. Matchett held an endowed chair in critical care medicine at Pennsylvania State College of Medicine. His responsibilities also included chief of the critical care division and ICU director. Previously he served as medical director at Good Shepherd Specialty Hospital, a long-term acute-care hospital.
Dr. Matchett attended University of Rochester School of Medicine and completed his residency at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York, where he served as chief resident. He then completed a pulmonary and critical care fellowship at Yale University, where he also was a guest scholar in the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program. Dr. Matchett is board-certified in internal and critical care medicine.
In 2008, Dr. Matchett received a Presidential Citation by the Society of Critical Care Medicine for his contributions to improving ICU quality of care. He is a member of the American Thoracic Society, American College of Chest Physicians, and Society of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Matchett also is a member of the American Telemedicine Association, where he serves on a working group focused on critical care telemedicine.
Frank M. Lucas
Chief Operating Officer
Frank Lucas brings more than 20 years of physician practice management and consulting experience to the Intensivist Group. He handles the company’s daily financial and practice management as well as brings his expertise in finance and financial modeling to The Intensivist Group’s consulting clients.
Mr. Lucas began his career in hospital administration for the U.S. Army, where he served at hospitals on bases in San Antonio and South Korea. He left the Army after six years, having attained the rank of captain, to manage large group practices that specialized in emergency, critical care, anesthesiology and radiology.
Mr. Lucas also launched a medical billing business, which led him to developing a specialty in intensivist services. He has consulted with or negotiated contracts addressing intensivist services for more than 70 clients.
Mr. Lucas received a bachelor of business administration in accounting and a master of business administration from Ohio University.
